Ramadan is a Muslim religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; the month in which the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Mohammad. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which Muslims do not eat or drink anything from true dawn to sunset. Fasting is meant to teach the person patience, sacrifice and humility. Here in Jordan, Ramadan is by law. No one is allowed to consume or even possess food or beverage in public. No smoking or even chewing gum during the fasting hours! It is a sacrifice to not be able to carry a bottle of water wherever I go but the weather is getting cooler and more comfortable. Almost every shop, market, store, etc shuts down for people to perform prayers and consume the Iftar meal (the meal to end the fast) these places then re-open and stay open for a good part of the night. Since the majority of people keep windows open to catch a breeze, I can stand out on my balcony about 6:30PM and breathe in the scent of the entire city cooking and listen to the clinking of pots, pans, and plates.
